Demon Deacons Head to South Bend

After a little unrest, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish got a week off to rest the body, the mind and the stank from that 30-point defeat to Duke. At least they washed some of it off with a victory over former bubble team Clemson.

Tuesday night it’s Wake Forest coming to town. After a rough start to the Danny Manning era, the Demon Deacons have play some solid ball lately, taking three of five and giving Virginia a run for their money this past weekend.

Expect to see the threes flying when these two teams face off. You know about Notre Dame; first in 3P%, but because the Demon Deacons don’t have an effective scorer inside, they tend to launch a ton of deep balls. In fact, they’ve taken 20 or more in a game nine straight times. Of course, when they miss, they miss a lot, five times shooting below 30%. However, three times in their last ten contests, they have hit double-digit 3-pointers.

The trick for Wake Forest is to make sure missed shots on the defensive end remain missed shots and don’t let a poor rebounding team like the Irish get second looks. For most of the season, Devin Thomas has been that shutdown rebounder, but he’s struggled lately, grabbing just five boards per game in his last three. In his last game against Virginia, he got into foul trouble, played just 16 minutes and scored just three points.

In the end though, Notre Dame should come out aggressive at home, attacking the rim with both Jerian Grant and Demetrius Jackson. With penetration comes easy buckets for Zach Auguste underneath and if there is one guy in need of easy open buckets lately, it’s the Notre Dame big man.
