Quick Thoughts:

It’s hard to be 6-9/245 and be under-the-radar, yet Damonte Dodd somehow pulled it off.

Physically, Dodd is everything a coach dreams about when he goes to sleep. Dodd is long and athletic, mobile with a great frame. His body reminds me of a young Brandon Davies of BYU.

Dodd also has a good motor and is terrific in traffic. He can run in transition and on the defensive end, he’s a dedicated shot blocker.

Yet, the competition he faced in high school was lightweight, so he was smart enough to go to prep school last season.

This was a good decision because it allowed Dodd to both play with and play against better talent. It also allowed him to develop his back to the basket skills.

Prior to prep school, Dodd did all his damage at the rim. He dunked just about everything and on the rare chance he put up a jumper or a hook shot, the ball might have gone in, but his mechanics were down-right ugly.

Freshman Outlook:

After a solid season of prep school, I truly believe Damonte won’t need to redshirt and can contribute right away.

Sophomores Shaquille Cleare and Charles Mitchell should eat up most of the minutes at the five spot, but if Mark Turgeon ever wants to have some fun and put two big bodies in the paint at the same time, then Dodd would be perfect.

He’s not going to offer up much on the offensive end (offensive rebound put backs), but he could be a solid defender who will protect the rim and snag some boards.
