Maryland Adds a Jersey Boy

Mark Turgeon continues to pile up four-star recruits.

Jared Nickens needed just one visit to College Park and he was sold, verbally committing to Maryland this weekend.

A native of Westtown, Pennsylvania, he’s listed as the #22 shooting guard by ESPN (although he should be a small forward in college).

He is the third top-rated player the Terrapins have locked down in what’s starting to look like an impressive 2014 class (too bad the ACC won’t get to enjoy their talents). Nickens joins the 7th rated shooting guard Dion Wiley and the 12th rated shooting guard Romelo Trimble. In fact, Maryland is tied with Ohio State for the most 4-star or up commitments in the 2014 class.

So what can Maryland fans expect?

Although he’s not a great athlete and he’s not going to out-quick anyone, Nickens has great size and length. He’s listed at 6-6, but looks 2-3 inches longer. He’s been known for a long time as a pure spot-up jump shooter, specializing in the corner three (tone setters), but over the last year, he’s improved his ball handling and mid-range shot.

Nickens was originally a member of the 2013 class, but then reclassified. The decision garnered a ton of attention, because a lot more coaches came knocking on his door. This important thing is, with another year of high school and AAU ball, Nickens will have more time to work on his dribble-drive as well as spend more time in the weight room (he could use anther 20 pounds of muscle).
