Virginia Tech’s Top Recruit Denied Admission

If there was one school in the ACC desperate to avoid bad news this offseason it had to be Virginia Tech, but the Hokies appear to not be so lucky.

Tech signee Donte Clark has been denied admission to the university according to reporter Mark Merman.

From the Roanoke Times:

Clark is still going through the NCAA Eligibility Center (formerly called the NCAA Clearinghouse) process, so it is not yet known whether he will meet NCAA freshman eligibility standards or not.

First off, Clark spent the past year at Hargrave Military Academy as a postgraduate. The main reason to go to a school for postgraduate is to avoid academic issues just like this. So much for that.

The Hokies lost both their top two shooting guards, Erick Green (to graduation) and Robert Brown to transfer), so I had Clark penciled in as a clear starter at shooting guard, so this is sort of a huge hit for the Hokies.

Clark was the highest rated recruit for Tech’s head coach James Johnson. The #23 rated shooting guard is athletic with a long frame. He excels at putting the ball on the floor and finishing at the rim.

Luckily, there are enough bodies at Tech to compete for the newly open spot.

Heading into the fall, former walk-on Will Johnston probably has the edge. He’s actually spent more time as an undersized three last year, but he’s a three-point specialist, so he’s actually a better fit for the two.

Sophomore Adam Smith is a transfer from UNC Wilmington and he can certainly earn some minutes, although his natural position is at the point.

Freshman Ben Emelogu (#59 ranked shooting guard) is a legit shooter, but like Johnston above, he doesn’t have the ball handling skills to be anything more than one-dimensional as a rookie.

The coaching staff also has European freshman Malik Mueller, as well as Devin Wilson (#107 ranked PG). However, both players are extremely raw and are not ready to step in and compete at this level right now.
